Excerpt from Doctors and Doctors: Some Curious Chapters in Medical History and Quackery Although this little book is built upon different lines to those upon which Mr. Jea 'reson's amus ing Book about Doctors is constructed, I think it necessary to state, that I have not seen that work since it was first published in 1860. If I have referred to it on one or, it may be, on two occasions, the reference has been taken from notes preserved since that time. Within the definition of Quackery I have included the ao-called Miracles at Lourdes, and the clumsy tricks of those who make a living by the pretence of calling spirits from the vasty deep. But it must not be supposed from this circumstance that I place both on the same platform. Both owe their origin tosuperstition; but the advomte of the one is a respect able Catholic clergyman; while the principal supporter oi the other is a clumsy showman, whose primary object is to make money. If I have dealt unsparingly withthefirst, itisbecauseadistinctchallengetodis prove the reality of these Modern Miracles has been.
