This wonderfully priced double-CD retrospective was released in conjunction with a fiction collection sharing the same name, both meant to honor the tenth anniversary of Britain's acid house movement. And you really must give compiler Sarah Champion credit for securing a lion's share of the era's defining tracks, mostly by artists who continue to be relevant a decade later. Opening with the seminal 808 State selection "Pacific State," disc one stays committed to the dancefloor with the acid assault of Hardfloor's "Acperience1" and the template tech-house of Detroit's Derrick May and Chicago's Green Velvet. There's also the divine arpeggio synth line on Underworld's "Rez" that is so good it'll cause a lump in your throat every time. Disc two focuses on the blissful after-effects of the weekend's hedonism with earthy electronic etherealism by F.S.O.L. and Sueno Latino. It also gives time to the pop-acid crossover of Shamen and the Farm, an inevitable byproduct of a musical movement that grew so rapidly. Then follows the post-acid developments of LTJ Bukem and Goldie, whose "Inner City Life" stands as a classic along side anything from rock's late-'60s heyday. Granted, not every song from this fertile period was so genius. Many would just assume forget the abundance of mindless rave music that elicited equal if not better response in those drug-fueled days. But these are the classics that stand the test of time. If it weren't for these triumphs, it is doubtful that anyone would bother with an anniversary celebrating acid house in the first place. ~ Joshua Glazer, Rovi
