It begins with a history of fossils discovered there, which include several significant finds, then describes what the area was like millions of years ago. There were three main ecosystems--the marine environment, the floodplains or riparian zone, and higher ground. The animals found in each ecosystem left their fossils in specific parts of the park, so walking through what we today call the Aguja formation is where someone might encounter fossils from animals that lived in the floodplains, millions of years ago. The text, then, offers an overview of that environment then and now, and some species-specific field guide-type accounts of key animals--scientific names, descriptions, size, diet, and its fossil history within the Park. Key animals also are illustrated with a b&w field sketch by paleoartist Julius Csotonyi. A glossary and index finish off the book"--
