There are so many things for a young tyrannosaurus rex to do on her first day out of the egg. Dinah wants to try out all the great new things she can do with her feet- STOMP!- and her mouth- CHOMP!- and her head- WHOMP! But when she catches some cuddly mammals smooching and decides to give that a try, she finds that her fabulous new body may not be equipped for the subtle art of kissing cute little critters. She needs to find a friend like her to share her rough and tumble dinosaur kisses.
My family has been out of town for about 3 weeks for a whirlwind Christmas vacation. We spent a week at Disneyland, a weekend in San Diego for my big sister's wedding, and then we went to Grandma and Grandpa's house for awhile to destroy their house before getting back to life as usual here in Monterey. Friday was our first trip back to the library and my 4 year old was immediately drawn to this book. It has great cover appeal, with bright colors and a friendly, love-crazed t-rex sprinting across a field. She picked it for her bedtime story that night, and all my kids thought it was pretty great. Most of the time I am really drawn to the "lesson" stories, and those are the kinds of stories I find myself writing most often as well. Picture books are just such a great chance to sneak teaching in without them noticing, it's hard to pass it up. But sometimes you need something that is just fun, like a baby dinosaur accidentally eating a small lizard that she was making kissy faces at the page before. Or that same baby dinosaur trying to kiss a brontosaurus and accidentally biting him in the bum. (Yes, I know it was determined that the brontosaurus is not a real dinosaur, but it is ingrained into my elementary school knowledge base that all those long necked herbivore dinosaurs are brontosauruses. So I will keep saying it.) Dinosaur Kisses is a great, silly read, perfect for bedtime giggles and snuggles.
