As can be expected from a Dummy series book, the author is himself an art photographer of note and able to bring techno mysteries within reach of us mere mortals. One weakness-- common to most photo books?is that he tries to cover too broad a territory for a niche subject. At least 30% of allotted space is taken up with the basics common to all genres of the field such as documentary, sports and wedding photography. By the time one has been shooting long enough to develop a flair for artsy subjects, they?ve probably been there done that, when it comes to things like the rule of thirds, using flash fill and so forth. That effort would have been better spent going into more depth on making and selling art photos. More examples of his own work for inspiring the creative juices would have also been welcome. Nonetheless, this book would be a useful reference manual for most any photographer?s shelf.
