This new method of fact presentation is designed to stimulate the clinical thought process to a more rapid attainment of the essentials of diagnosis. Each page is accordingly restricted to one individual subject or symptom, simplified to its basic essentials, and diagrammatically illustrated where necessary. The authors have assumed a previous knowledge of the medical history of each case, together with the findings of a basic clinical examination, so these aspects have been deliberately excluded, leaving the main problems to be individually and simply described and the differential diagnostic value of each formulated Each chapter describes the subjective symptoms, such as pain, for which medical assistance has been sought, together with the general manifestations of the particular illness; to make for rapid reference the chapters are arranged in alphabetical order. Asystematic organ-orientated presentation follows and the objective findings are clinically correlated; this is succeeded by an appraisal of the results of the specific laboratory and other investigations recommended, together with the normal values for comparison. The figures given for the relative frequency of individual disorders apply to the main signs and symptoms and are compiled from the different sources available. Where these are equivocal, an average prevalence incidence has been calculated. The subjoined references to the literature apply only to the individual subject of each chapter; they make no claim to completeness, but in general apply to the latest published work.
