Seller's Description:
Various. Fair. An interesting illustratd biography about Diego Velazquez, the leading Spanish painter. Diego Velazquez was a leading Spanish painter at the court of King Philip IV. He was active during the 'Spanish Golden Age', and worked in the Baroque style. He produced many portraits of many significant figures, including those of the Spanish royal family. His most notable work is 'Las Meninas', which shows a room in the Royal Alcazar of Madrid, with the Infanta Margaret Theresa in the centre, surrounded by staff. This book is an interesting biography of his life and work, including engravings of his portraits throughout. Originally written in German by Carl Justi, a German art historian who was the Professor of Art History at the University of Bonn. He is best known for his three major biographies, including this one on Velazquez, one on Johann Joachim Wincklemann, and one on Michelangelo. Translated into English by Augustus Henry Keane, a journalist and linguist. He was the editor of the 'Glasgow Free Press', which got shut down after only a few years due to it's political views. Some of his other works include 'Handbook of the History of the English Language', 'The Gold of Ophir-Whence Brought and by Whom? ', and 'The Boer States'.
