Ab dem Jahre 1884 lehrte er in W???rzburg Apologetik und Christliche Kunstgeschichte. Mit dem vorliegenden Werk gelangte Schell zwar zu internationaler Anerkennung, wurde jedoch von der katholischen Kirche auf den Index gesetzt. Die aufgeworfenen Divergenzen mit seiner Kirche beizulegen war Herman Schell bis zu seinem fr???hen Tod im Alter von 56 Jahren nicht gelungen, seine Thesen sind heute jedoch durch die katholische Kirche respektiert und anerkannt.
