Very good in very good dust jacket. Mit dem Ende der DDR verloren die meisten der rund 2000 Kulturhäuser im Land auch ihre finanziellen Träger. Im Einigungsvertrag aber wurden sie vergessen, nirgends fand sich ein Budget für sie. Viele von ihnen wurden daher entweder geschlossen oder vorübergehend in Verkaufsmärkte umgewandelt und sind heute in ihrem Bestand gefährdet. Die vielfältig nutzbaren Gebäude sind keineswegs nur Produkte des «Bitterfelder Weges» oder der Kulturoffensive der fünfziger Jahre, sondern setzen die Volkshaustradition der ersten Hälfte dieses Jahrhunderts fort. Die Wurzeln dieser sozialreformerischen Bewegung reichen weit bis in das 19. Jahrhundert zurück, als in England und in der Schweiz die ersten Häuser entstanden, um Arbeitern die Möglichkeit der Versammlung, Bildung und kulturellen Betätigung außerhalb von Kirchen und Kneipen zu bieten. Der vorliegende Band rekonstruiert die Geschichte der Volkshausbewegung und beschreibt die Entstehungsbedingungen der ostdeutschen Kulturhäuser. Über 50 von ihnen werden exemplarisch dokumentiert-in ihrer architektonischen Vielfalt wie in ihrer gestalterischen Pracht.
