Die neue Kunst, die sie suchten, galt ihnen vielmehr als der Aus druck einer neuen Weit und Lebensanschauung, um deren Gehalt und Eigenart sie rangen, und aus diesem Zusammen klang von Gehalt und Form erhofften sie eine neue Kultur erstehen zu sehen, die, in der Tiefe des deutsch-en Wesens wurzelnd, sich zu den Hohen reinen und allgemeinen Meh schentums erheben sollte. Eine solche Kultur konnte nur von Pers???nlichkeiten getragen werden, deren innere Ver fassung ihrem Wesen und ihren Forderungen entsprach, und so mu???te die Bildung zu jenem neuen Deutsch und Menschentum mit Notwendigkeit in den Gedankenkreis unserer Klassiker treten, mit gleicher Notwendigkeit, w1e vor ihnen Rousseau das Ideal der neuen Gesellschaft nur auf der Voraussetzung einer neuen Erziehung begr???nden konnte. Hieraus entsprang ihnen der Antrieb zu einem erzieherischen Denken, das mit dem Pers???nlichkeitsideal notwendigerweise auch ein Ideal der Bildung, die zu ihm f???hrte, ins Auge fa???te. Pers???nlichkeitswerte sind auch in Zeiten vorhanden und anerkannt, wo es noch keine Bildung gibt. Aber auf den H???hen des Kulturlebens ist die vollendete Pers???nlichkeit doch nur auf der Voraussetzung einer vollkommenen Bil dung denkbar. Freilich bleibt diese letztere stets nur das vornehmste Mittel zum Zweck. Richtung wie Gehalt wird ihr durch das Endziel vorgezeichnet, nicht umgekehrt.
