Das Jahr 1977 war bestimmt vom repressiven kulturpolitischen Kurs der SED nach der Biermann-Ausburgerung. Zahlreiche Kunstler, unter ihnen der populare Schauspieler Manfred Krug, verliessen die DDR. Zugleich machten sich die innenpolitischen Folgen der Entspannungspolitik durch die hohe Zahl von Ausreiseantragstellern bemerkbar. Unzufriedenheit herrschte auch aufgrund der schlechten Versorgungslage, mit einem Hohepunkt im Sommer wahrend der aKaffee-Krise: Die Bevolkerung machte ihrem Unmut uber den Wegfall gunstiger Kaffeesorten und die Einfuhrung von minderwertigem Ersatzkaffee Luft.
