Damit stellte Bacmeister die Sprache selbst in den Mittelpunkt seiner Aktion und fasste ihre lexikalischen Einheiten nicht mehr nur als Mittel zum Zweck der Erforschung der Geschichte ihrer (Sprach-)Trager auf, so wie es in fruheren Sammelaktionen der Fall war. Bacmeister erhielt uber 100 Proben aus allen Teilen der Welt, primar aus Eurasien, die zum allergroaten Teil unveroffentlicht sind. Eberhard Winkler behandelt in seiner Studie elf dieser Proben: zwei livische (aus Kurland und Livland), eine krewinische, eine lappische/samische, eine mordwinische (Erza), zwei syrjanische (Komi; von Bacmeister selbst aufgezeichnet), eine ostjakische/chantische, eine wogulische/manische und zwei jurakische/nenzische. Nach einer Einleitung in den Komplex "Bacmeister-Proben" finden sich zu jeder Sprachprobe Anmerkungen zur Probe selbst, eine Transliteration der Handschrift, eine Satzanalyse, ein Worterverzeichnis, die Grammatik und Anmerkungen zur jeweiligen Sprache.
