Galilee, dans son Dialogue sur les deux grands systemes du monde, a soutenu le systeme de Copernic, qui relegue la Terre au rang d'une planete parmi d'autres. Or, si la Terre n'est pas unique, pourquoi l'humanite le serait-elle ? Ainsi apparait-il naturel de convoquer a nouveau Salviati, Sagredo et Simplicio, pour les faire dialoguer cette fois-ci, non plus sur l'heliocentrisme, mais sur la pluralite des mondes habites. Apres l'indispensable rappel des faits scientifiques, nos trois amis se voient contraints par la nature meme de la question, d'examiner les fondements de SETI comme de la science, et finissent par soulever malgre eux, de profondes et genantes questions d'ordre epistemologique et philosophique, voire metaphysique.
