Dhampir is the first book in a very entertaining series.
"Dhampir" introduces us to the Dhampir (half human, half vampire) of the title aka the raven haired Magiere, her half-elf companion Leesil and the fay hound Chap.
Initially, we find these three main characters working their way through the countryside of a Tolkienesque world conning the poor village folk into believing there are vampires in their midst and performing elaborate hoaxes to vanquish the imagined beasts.
Magiere however, tires of such times and wants instead to use their loot to settle down in their very own tavern by the sea but unfortunately for them, their vampire 'slaying' exploits have not gone unnoticed by the noble dead and their presence attracts the attentions of three powerful vampires in their new home.
The pretend vampire hunter must become the real deal...
So begins a series of books which had me turning the pages long into the night. Dhampir can be read a standalone novel about a vampire huntress whilst from here, both the story and the characters get a lot more complex and engaging in the future books in the "Noble Dead" series. It's a great blend between the fantasy world of humans, elves etc. and the horror subgenre of vampires. Some have compared it to Buffy The Vampire Slayer meets The Lord Of The Rings which I guess is perhaps the most simplistic way to describe it but I think there is more to it than that.
I found Dhampir to be easy to read, the pacing flowed nicely and it kept me interested throughout. It was very pleasant to find a somewhat different twist on the vampire books out there which so often seem more about sex and shopping these days whilst this series has a real story running through it which should appeal to both fantasy readers and a wider audience alike.
