I actually bought this book for my husaband,
who really enjoyed it, but I found the story
to be much too gory and graphic. However
I think that Arthur Hailey is a very good writer.

Predictable, but a nice romp
Malcolm Ainslie is our protagonist, the homicide detective of the title. A surprising character in many ways, sometimes almost an anti-hero. He?s given up the priesthood, married and joined the force. All well and good. Like all busy detectives, he neglects his wife. But it also is revealed that he has cheated on her several times in the past with a co-worker. And yet Malcolm should have our sympathies? Well, yes. You see, Malcolm is not in the best situation right now. His affair has soured and the other woman has been promoted past him. He?s summoned to the execution of a man he put behind bars to hear his last words. And what a revelation they are. Is the man innocent of a double-murder? Is it possible someone on the force is involved, someone Malcolm knows well? Hmmm. This book was too formulaic for me. I saw it coming. That said, the first third was a nice romp,
