I purchased this book because I wanted to read one book that contained the story of both Desi Arnaz, Lucille Ball and Desi & Lucy. I certainly thought a book title highlighting, "The Story of Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz," would accomplish that.
While the book certainly has information regarding each of them prior to becoming a couple, as well as when they were a couple, it is sorely lacking. It concentrates heavily on the Desilu empire, including details about stockholder meetings, the inner workings, etc. And when not doing that, there's a plethora of information on Lucille Ball. Desi's story is more like an every now and then "thin."
I don't think there is a good balance of storytelling. While there is a great deal to be learned of Lucy for each year that went by, I cannot say the same of Desi. In fact, there are only two pages devoted to the story of Desi and his second wife. A few chapters after reading it, I totally forgot the event was even chronicled.
One can tell the author did much research, something that is always commendable, but the contents of the title are very misleading. And though I will finish the book (I am near the end), I find the endless accounts of Desilu Studios to be off-putting.
Needless-to-say, I will be searching for another book to tell the tale.
