English Summary: Discovered in the 1920s by the French excavator Robert du Mesnil du Buisson, the palace of the royal Bronze Age city of Qatna holds a unique place in the tradition of Middle Eastern royal palaces of the 2nd millennium BC, both in terms of its monumentality and its architectural features. Between 1999 and 2010, the building and large parts of the ancient city (today: Tall Misrife) were re-examined as part of a joint Syrian/Italian/German project. This meant that the palace's architecture, the history of its construction, its layout and its function could be fundamentally re-evaluated. Volume QS 5, the first part of the final publication on the architecture of the Royal Palace of Qatna in western Syria, provides a summary of the research findings. These include the chronology and architectural history of the building, the construction techniques used and its classification in architectural history. They also include a description of both the urban aspects of the palace and its symbolic significance. The volume also addresses the restoration work undertaken in the area of the palace and summarizes the methodological principles applied during excavation, documentation and the processing of ceramic artifacts. Thus the volume provides a comprehensive overview of the royal palace of Qatna.
