So richte ich denn an Sie die Bitte, das kleine Buch auch im fremden Gewande freundlich aufzunehmen. Ihrer nachsichtigen Beurtheilung werden die hier gewonnenen Ergebnisse auf einem Gebiete, was schon von so vielen bearbeitet ist, ohne Zweifel reichlich bedurfen; m???chte es mir gelungen sein, die bisherigen Forschungen wenigstens an einigen Stellen erg???nzt und be richtigt zu haben. Dass die Untersuchung ???ber die Territorial verh???ltnisse des vorsullanischen Italiens, die hier meines Wissens zum ersten Male im Zusammenhang gef???hrt wird, nicht in allen Punkten zu sicheren Ergebnissen gelangen konnte, liegt in der Natur der Sache. Dennoch habe ich nicht darauf verzichten wollen, diese Resultate auch graphisch in einer politischen Karte des italischen Bundesgebiets zum Ausdruck zu bringen; wo das Kartenbild zu bestimmt aus gefallen ist, wird es an der Darstellung im Texte sein Correctiv finden. Schliesslich bemerke ich noch, dass zwei Abschnitte des Buches schon fr???her ver???ffentlicht sind: Cap. II in ita lienischer Bearbeitung in der turiner Rivista di Filologia classica VII (1879) p. 2337 - 62, und Cap.
