Die Erzählung über die junge Pädagigikstudentin Rita S. und ihr zweites Leben bezog ihre ungewöhnliche Spannung aus einer Liebe und deren exemplarische Verknüpfung mit den verworrenen Zuständen eines geteilten Landes und einer gespaltenen Welt. Entscheidung und Folge sei das Merkwürdigste am Menschen, hat Goethe einmal wissen lassen; hier, in Christa Wolfs spröder und zugleich bedingungsloser Geschichte fand die schöne Weisheit eine moderne Adaption. Der geteilte Himmel. DE 1963 (DDR), 1964 (BRD) Form Erzählung Epoche Gegenwart. Nach ihrem literarischen Debüt mit der Moskauer Novelle (1961), die nur in der DDR veröffentlicht wurde, schrieb Christa Wolf 1963 mit Der geteilte Himmel ihre erste Erzählung, die in beiden deutschen Staaten starke Beachtung fand. In dieser Liebesgeschichte behandelt sie als eine der ersten Autoren der DDR den Mauerbau (1961). Angeregt durch das Kulturprogramm »Bitterfelder Weg« (Stichwort R S. 1162) setzt sich Der geteilte Himmel mit der Arbeitswelt und ihren Produktionsbedingungen auseinander, sprengt dabei aber die engen Grenzen des sozialistischen Realismus. InhaltIm August 1961 erwacht die 20-jährige Rita Seidel nach einem Zusammenbruch im Krankenhaus und wird in ein Sanatorium überwiesen. Während ihrer Genesung rekapituliert sie die Ereignisse der letzten zwei JahreAls Büroangestellte in einem kleinen Dorf lernt sie den zehn Jahre älteren Chemiker Manfred Herrfurth kennen, und die beiden verlieben sich ineinander. Rita wird für ein Lehrerseminar angeworben und nutzt die Gelegenheit, zu Manfred nach Halle/Saale zu ziehen, wo sie ein Arbeitspraktikum in einem Waggonwerk beginnt. Sie identifiziert sich mit den Arbeitern und ihren Aufgaben, vor allem der Brigardier Metternagel weckt in ihr die Bereitschaft, sich für den Aufbau des Sozialismus zu engagieren. Ihr Verlobter steht der DDR kritisch gegenüber. Als eine von ihm entwickelte technische Neuerung von den Planungsbehörden nicht berücksichtigt wird, kehrt Manfred ohne Ankündigung von einem Chemiker-Kongress in West-Berlin nicht zurück – in der Annahme, dass Rita ihm folgen wird. Bei einem Besuch im Westen fühlt Rita sich fremd – wenige Tage vor dem Mauerbau fährt sie nach Halle zurück, wo sie kurz darauf bei einem Einsatz im Waggonwerk zusammenbricht. Nach dem Aufenthalt im Sanatorium findet sie erneut die Kraft, sich den Lebensbedingungen ihres Heimatstaates zu stellen. WirkungWolf beschreibt in ihrer Erzählung die Schwierigkeiten des geteilten Deutschlands mit den bis in das Privatleben hineinreichenden Auswirkungen. Die Autorin steht dabei deutlich auf der Seite ihrer Protagonistin. Doch die Darstellung einer kritischen Haltung zur DDR widersprach der sozialistischen Literaturdoktrin und wurde heftig kritisiert. Mit der Thematisierung der Republikflucht durchbrach Wolf zudem ein Tabu der DDR-Literatur. Dennoch erhielt sie mit dem Heinrich-Mann-Preis den bedeutendsten Literaturpreis der DDR (1963) und fand auch im Westen große Beachtung. Mit ihrem Mann Gerhard Wolf erarbeitete die Autorin 1964 das Drehbuch für die DEFA-Verfilmung von Der geteilte Himmel (RegieKonrad Wolf, in den Hauptrollen Renate Blume und Eberhard Esche), die ebenfalls ein großes Publikum fand. A. K. Christa Wolf, 1929 in Landsberg an der Warthe geboren, lebt mit ihrem Mann Gerhard Wolf in Berlin.
