Tobiasson-Svartman, however, remains haunted by this chance encounter; his equilibrium has been disturbed, and he is now compelled to find any pretence to return to the remote islet. I've read other Mankell books and thought from reviews that I might enjoy this different subject matter. There was so much cruelty to people and animals that I often put it down saying I wouldn't finish it. The main character had no empathy or sympathy with anyone. I did finish it but it was a completely unsatisfying read and a really dark humorless story.
