A clear and accessible introduction to Deconstruction which considers the philosophical and aesthetic foundations of the main theories--those of Derrida, de Man, Hillis, Miller, Hartman and Bloom. The author shows to what extent deconstructive theories can be read as critiques of Hegelian "logocentrism" and in what respects they are as much indebted to Romantic and Young Hegelian philosophies as to the thought of Nietzsche and Heidegger. In this respect the book can be read as a continuation of the authors The Philosophy of Modern Literary Theory (Athlone, 1999). The final chapter deals with the Sociological (Bourdieu in particular), Marxist, Feminist and Analytic reactions to deconstructive thought. The underlying idea is neither apotheosis nor condemnation, but a concrete (i.e. contextual) understanding of deconstructive philosophy and criticism. This is the ideal text for students who wish to understand how and why deconstruction has become the dominant tool of the humanities.
