Seller's Description:
Fine in near fine jacket. Octavo, 512pp. A fine, crisp copy, with remainder spray to the bottom edge. In a near fine price-clipped dust ajcket, with mild edgewear. This copy SIGNED by Smith on the title page, and additionally INSCRIBED by her on the opposite leaf: "To John Alden Carras, with admiration for his place in the world of tennis, and best wishes, Margaret Chase Smith." In addition to these two signatures, there is a typed SIGNED letter on Smith's Northwood Institute letterhead dated Dec. 3, 1984 from Smith to Mr. Carras presenting the book to him. Carras seems to have been a wealthy scion of the Dow family in Midland, Michigan; we were unable to ascertain the nature of his relationship to the sport of tennis. An appealing copy of this group of letters and speeches by the pioneering Senator from Maine, who served in that office for 24 years, having previously spent ten years in the House as a Representative from Maine. The book's title comes from the title of Chase's 1950 speech on the Senate floor denouncing the behavior of Joe McCarthy.
