Things grew to such a pitch at last, that the scholars had dwindled down to four little boys, the smallest, most mischievous of their species, who remained faithful to their posts because their mothers were behind hand in payment, and could not very well take their boys away while they owed Mrs. Forlay money. This noisy quartette would arrive day after day, hang up their caps, and try Deborah's patience to the utmost, as she taught them with her own sons. For more than three months these were the sole representatives of the once flourishing school. The reason of this decadence must be told. Two small cottages stood on some land belonging to Priory Farm that were usually let to workmen on the estate, but one of them happened to fall vacant, and then the news spread like wild-fire that a new school was to be opened there. It was to be wonderfully cheap, and wonderfully good. "Far better than that Widow Forlay's school," said Mrs. Griggs, "and we are going to send Peter there." She repeated this to every one who came in her way, and she added much more in praise of the new school, and in condemnation of the old one. Strange, unkind, unpleasant rumours began to circulate in the village about Deborah Forlay. No one could exactly state where they originated, or whether they had any foundation; but they were so often repeated that they began at last to be believed; and this gossip, arising just when the new school was about to be opened, turned the tide of popular favour. Parents and children were alike attracted by the novelty of the new establishment, and Deborah's pupils dropped off rapidly, until they had dwindled down to the quartette before...
