Suprisingly good, impossible to stop listening to.
This is a warning: Upon your first listen of Day & Age, you will likely think:
1) This is very, very silly. 2) This isn't particularly great either. 3) OK, it's not horrible...
And then, you will find yourself playing it again.
And again, and again.
I didn't listen to this CD until December of 2008, and during that month I listened to it more than I did any other CD for the entire YEAR. It's simply that contagious - and yet, it's not an album without flaws.
The biggest one is that the lyrics are not just bad, they're laughably so in many places. It's tempting to think that this is purposeful, that the band is having a laugh along with us, but that doesn't appear to be the case. Thankfully, the lyrics rarely get in the way of the music, which (as stated earlier) is addictive.
Take one part Duran Duran, another part ELO, another part The Killers from "Hot Fuss" and mix in a bit more production value ... and you have "Day & Age." Now, if someone tried to sell me on some music with that combination, I think I'd shrink away.
In fact, I did. That's why it took me awhile to start listening to this -- but once I did give it a chance, I couldn't stay away. It's a bit of a guilty pleasure, but the important thing is that it is a pleasure. Give it a chance, and you'll almost assuredly feel the same way.
