MOVIE TIE-IN: Eyewitness of an epoch is the title of a film on Daumier distributed by Nico Crama in Holland and by Contemporary Films Ltd., London. CONTENTS: Daumier and his times; Bibliography; Chronological background; Plates. EXCERPT: Honore Daumier was a French painter and graphic artist with a deep concern for the political and social developments of his times. Between 1832 and 1872 he drew, on average, two illustrations a week for Paris newspapers. Under Louis-Philippe, the Second Republic, Napoleon III and the Third Republic there were a great many suitable subjects (see Chronological background), although for thirty of these forty years the artist's freedom of choice was restricted by an official censorship. Daumier's varied oeuvre includes 4, 000 lithographs for newspapers, and 1, 000 wood engravings for newspapers and books. It is estimated that he produced 300 paintings and 1, 000 drawings, besides modelling figures in clay. It did not all come easily ho him: he had trouble with the technique of painting, the art he preferred, and he disliked making wood engravings because he had to leave the actual work of engraving to others. However, he was in his element when working on lithographic stones, and it is with his lithographic work that this book is concerned...
