His 1898 book on The Play of Animals tried to persuade educators that play is a preparation for later life. It's suggested that his theory is based on the beliefs of Charles Darwin as he believed that when animals 'play' they are practising basic instincts, such as fighting, for survival. The author calls this book "selected lectures, " and explains that it is by no means an exhaustive, systematic treatise on the mental life of the child, but that certain aspects of child psychology receive fuller and more detailed treatment than would be possible in a systematic work of equal length. The latter part of the book, dealing with apperception, recognition, conception, judgment and reasoning." Owner's ex libris plate on front pastedown.
