The second section focuses on the transliteration and translation of the text, as well as on commentary of individual passages. Based on the text edition, the third section is dedicated to an analysis of the structure of the text. At the same time archaeological finds and features have been taken into account in order to compare and contrast written description of the ritualistic elements of embalming with more tangible dimensions. The fourth and final section looks at overall questions concerning the function and purpose of the "embalming ritual" text as a whole. German description: Das "Balsamierungsritual" ist ein in drei romerzeitlichen Abschriften erhaltener Text, in dem die Salbung und Bandagierung eines Leichnams vom Kopf bis zu den Beinen beschrieben wird. Zunachst werden sachliche Balsamierungshandlungen kurz erklart und anschliessend mithilfe von Verklarungsspruchen religios ausgedeutet. Die primare Verwendung des Manuskriptes ist seine Rezitation im Rahmen der Stundenwachen in der Nacht vor der Grablegung in der Balsamierungsstatte, um die Handlungen des vorausgegangenen Balsamierungsprozesses durch den performativen Sprechakt der verklarenden Rede abzuschliessen. Nach der Rezitation wurde der Ritualpapyrus dem Verstorbenen mit ins Grab gegeben, um die Wirksamkeit der Handlungen und Spruche durch die Verschriftlichung dauerhaft zu machen. Susanne Topfer legt eine erstmalig vollstandige Edition des Textes vor. Im ersten Teil werden die drei Textzeugen vorgestellt. Das Augenmerk liegt zunachst auf der Beschreibung der ausseren Erscheinung der Papyri und der Handschriften. Daneben werden die Besitzer der Textabschriften ausfuhrlicher betrachtet. Den Schwerpunkt des zweiten Teils bilden die Transliteration und die Ubersetzung des Textes sowie die Kommentierung von Einzelstellen. Auf der Grundlage der Textedition widmet sich der dritte Abschnitt der Analyse der Struktur des Textes. Zudem werden archaologische Funde und Befunde berucksichtigt, um dem Ritualaspekt der Balsamierung uber die Verschriftlichung hinaus eine praktische Dimension gegenuberzustellen.
