Mercy Goode is only truly good at one thing: finding mischief wherever she goes. Such as getting arrested at a murder scene with Raphael Sauvageau, a brutally handsome, ruthless smuggler with a dangerous past and a dubious future. The silver-tongued devil doesn't deserve a lick of her confidence, but she has evidence that he's not the killer... Raphael has no time for obsession. He's an empire to run, a murder to avenge, and a plan to save his brother that is likely a suicide mission. But this clever, infuriating bluestocking--who insists she's an amateur sleuth--keeps showing up where she doesn't belong. And for some bloody reason they can't seem to be in the same room without him yanking her into his arms and kissing her until they're both breathless. Power, prestige, and a staggering fortune hasn't filled the abysmal void where Raphael's heart should be... Perhaps what he needs is a night with her. Perhaps what he needs is redemption. Perhaps what he needs is a bit of Mercy."--Page 4 of cover.

I'm all about the hero of the story, but Ms. Byrne writes heroines that are so unique they are as exciting to meet as her heroes. Mercy is proof this is the case. She was self confident in her abilities, even if they did not meld with society's expectations. And although she was aware of her inability to attract a suitor, she didn't let it sway who she was at heart. I absolutely adored everything about her and loved watching her relationship with Raphael develop.
"She'd come to terms with the fact that she was a thorn in the collective side of the world at large.
Forever too much or not enough."
Raphael was pretty unique on his own. With a French accent, a dubious background, and a streak of protectiveness for those he loves, I read his actions and decisions with bated breath, uncertain what the ultimate outcome would be. Watching him with Mercy was heat inducing as he was forthright and pretty bold with her. With each page I fell harder and harder into love with him.
"No. He was not mysterious, this man. He wore his darkness. Advertised his sins. Pinned his emotions to his suit like a badge of honor."
This is filled with drama, mystery and action that kept me on my toes. Whatever secret Raphael was keeping had me turning pages as quickly as possible only to slow them way down once the steam factor came into play. After all, when you've got the chemistry and heat that resided between Mercy and Raphael on the page in front of you, it's a biological response.
