Morgan Adams (Davis) is the daughter of a pirate who has followed in her father's footsteps. When he dies, he passes along his ship, a crew of bandits, and one third of a treasure map (which happens to be tattooed on his skull). Morgan is eager to search out the rest of the map and retrieve the riches, but the fragment she holds is in Latin. Morgan then buys a well-educated slave, William Shaw (Matthew Modine), who can read the ancient language and already has a taste for the criminal life. However, Morgan and William are not long into their search when they discover that someone else is following the same trail for the rest of the treasure map: Dawg Brown (Frank Langella), Morgan's uncle and as black-hearted a scurvy dog as ever boarded a ship. As Morgan and Dawg battle each other over the fragments of the map, a British journalist (Maury Chaykin) covers their feud for the penny press. William Shaw was originally to have been played by Michael Douglas, who dropped out in the early stages of this troubled production. Mark Deming, Rovi

TITLE: Cutthroat Island
GENRE: Adventure, pirate treasure hunt in the Age of Enlightenment
CAST: Geena Davis, Matthew Modine
PLOT: To bring down a successful movie operation, everything possible is done to thwart the telling of this tale. Gal inherits piece of map. Her two uncles have the other two pieces (then one uncle has two pieces, bad Dawg). The map is in Latin and coded. The island finally found. Treasure unearthed. Betrayal seems to doom all, but the heroics of the gal and her 'Latin' lover save the day. But the movie company is scuttled anyway.
RETURN ON INVESTMENT: 8 of 10 for the movie; 9.5 of 10 for the behind the scenes skullduggery; Davis and Modine shine working their chosen trade. The stunts (in a swashbuckling pirate film very important) are superbly executed. There's dialog and suspense and music and sets and costumes. Somehow this film is listed in Guiness Book of Records as Hollywoods' biggest flop (just for that reason it's worth the time).
DVD BONUS: Brief bios and filmos of the stars and the director and editor; theatrical trailer
ADDED NOTES: Really, an entity must have conspired to doom this film. The cover of the media even has the stars names under the wrong images! This movie has a stunt in it where G D jumps out a 2nd story window, tumbles a somersault on the 1st floor overhang and comes down into the seat of a coach being pulled by 4 huge horses and she lands in a sitting position to take the reins! One of the best stunts in celluloid history. And they mark this film as a failure? One could make a case that this effort kept the whole genre alive in our minds and helped lend to the success of The P's of the Carib a few years later!
