Not illustrated. 1871 Excerpt: ...to this sharp engagement, but there are reports to him concerning it from Generals Barnes and Byng, and also from Colonel O'Callaghan, all commanding brigades in Sir William's Division, and who were all also actively engaged in the fight. General Barnes in his report praises highly the conduct of the 9 2d Regiment, and particularly of Major Seaton of that regiment, who was severely wounded. The 50th Regiment also distinguished itself greatly on the occasion. Of it he says: --"To the gallant conduct of the 50th Regiment, commanded by Colonel Harrison, is principally to be ascribed the success in the ultimate object assigned to my brigade--viz., in carrying the mound on the left of the enemy's position. When within a very few yards of this point, the enemy opened a most lively fire, which had no other effect than that of animating the soldiers to new exertions, which crowned their success." General Byng, too, in his report, has nothing but praise to bestow on his brigade. He writes in conclusion of it: --"The battalions moving on in columns, the Buffs were led by Captain Morley, and the Provisional Battalion by Captain Knox, 31st, in very good style. The latter officer, I am sorry to say, was severely wounded. Lieutenant Lerke, of the 60th, behaved admirably, and I lament extremely his having lost his left arm on that occasion. It is unnecessary for me to express my feelings to you on the loss I have sustained in the death of my excellent and brave friend and aide-de-camp, Captain Clitheron." Colonel (afterwards Lord) Hardinge, who held a command in the Portuguese army at the time, also makes an interesting report on the conduct of these troops in the action here referred to, the original of which is among these papers; and there are also le...
