Existem amplas evid???ncias de que a periodontite ??? um factor de risco para certas doen???as sist???micas, e a sa???de oral prejudicada tem sido associada a mastiga??????o e problemas nutricionais, especialmente entre os idosos, com efeitos altamente negativos na sua qualidade de vida.
