Kim Carnes' Crazy in the Night is a budget-priced collection of most of her 1980-1986 hits. However, it does not include her 1981 chart-topping smash "Bette Davis Eyes." That song is readily available elsewhere, so try to ignore its unfortunate omission and focus on the 12 songs at hand. Carnes -- whose husky vocal rasp makes it easy to christen her and Bonnie Tyler female versions of Rod Stewart -- first broke into the business as a nightclub and session singer and was a member of the New Christy Minstrels. Although she worked as a songwriter for MOR and country artists such as Barbara Streisand and Kenny Rogers, Carnes attempted to crack the pop and rock markets. Her husband, Dave Ellingson, was a frequent songwriting partner. Her first solo hit was a terrific cover of Smokey Robinson and the Miracles' "More Love." Carnes' version of the Box Tops' "Cry Like a Baby" is energetic pop. She has a gift for warm, supple numbers like "Mistaken Identity," "Does it Make You Remember," "I Pretend," and "Hurricane" that are MOR, but not syrupy. The dark rocker "Draw of the Cards" is moody and tension filled, and those traits are sharpened by the crisp production. Although "Voyeur," "Invisible Hands," and "You Make My Heart Beat Faster" are rock songs at heart, the glossy synthesizers and drum machines often push them to the edge of new wave or dance music. Whether Carnes felt comfortable with her '80s material or viewed it as a vehicle for mainstream commercial success isn't clear, but she was pretty good at it nonetheless.
