This is a limited-edition box set of material recorded for the Cowboy Bebop animé series. Music is by Yoko Kanno & the Seatbelts, and it is truly stunning. Over the course of four CDs, you will hear just about every style of music imaginable, all extremely well-played. There's rock & roll, '40s-style pop, Blue Note session outtakes, World Saxophone Quartet-style jazz, acoustic slide guitar blues, harmonica blues, dub with spacy guitar, modern jazz, ambient -- it's quite a wild ride. Players include Naruyoshi Kikuchi (Otomo Yoshihide, Tipographica, Ground Zero), Tsuneo Imahori (Otomo Yoshihide, Tipographica, Syzygys, Haco), and several NY guests like Steven Bernstein (Sex Mob, Lounge Lizards) and Bobby Previte (John Zorn, Wayne Horvitz, Tom Waits). Some of it was even recorded and mixed by Rudy Van Gelder. Although this was almost certainly produced for fans of the animé series, its appeal goes well beyond that to any adventurous listener. There are short snippets of dialogue included, but that's why CD players can be programmed. This set also contains various alternate takes from the individual soundtracks, as well as otherwise-unavailable live recordings. Recommended. ~ Sean Westergaard, Rovi
