Claremont belongs to the Queen, and has been the residence of several royal people. King Louis Philippe and his Queen both died there. The grounds are fine, and there is a lake of some magnitude. Parnham (population 12,622).--A flourishing town oh the Wey, and a station on the South-Western Railway, forty miles from London. It contains a fine old castle belonging to the Bishops of Winchester. It is the centre of an important trade in hops. Near Farnham, at Waverley (about two miles east), are interesting remains of a Cistercian abbey, the most important in southern England during the Middle Ages. Still nearer the town is Moor Park, once the seat of Sir William Temple, celebrated for its Dutch gardens, and the scene of.some of the most important events in the personal history of Dean Swift. The camp of Aldershot--which, though situated in Hampshire, is reached from Farnham--has added much to the prosperity of the town.... Godalming (population 2,455).--A straggling town in the valley of the Wey, thirty-four miles from London, and about four miles south of Guildford, on the London and Portsmouth line of railway. It is surrounded by hills, and the country adjacent is exceedingly pretty, and a favourite haunt of many well-known English artists. The pleasant hamlet of Farncomb adjoins the town.
