Have you ever had to decide what to do with a very large dead body on a Mexican beach, or an unidentified corpse by a Devonian cowshed when the herd is due in for milking? How should you deal with a drug runner rescued from the Caribbean sea when he pulls a gun on you? And how would you react if one of your patients was abducted by aliens? If you are a GP it seems these are routine matters. From coping with the suicide of a colleague to the unusual whereabouts of a jar of Coleman's mustard, this is the story of one rural doctor's often misguided attempts to make sense of the career in which he has unwittingly found himself.

Well, it's my own fault. I thought I was purchasing a book akin to "All Creatures, Great and Small," with the slight difference of the book's hero being a rural GP instead of a rural vet. Although I can argue that the book's title was misleading, I still have only myself to blame for not delving beneath the cover before I bought it, hook, line and sinker. In hopes of saving other readers from the error of my ways, I must say emphatically that this is NOT a charming book about an engaging English doctor and his delightful array of patients, all of whom reside within the thatched roof cottages of some quaint country village. The doctor in this book spends his time anywhere but in the countryside. He is not only a resident of some fairly big English towns (such as London!), but he spends years, as a military medicine man, in South Africa and South America! The title of the book is based on the fact that, eventually, he does end up as a rural GP. This fact is mentioned (at the beginning and at the end of the book) almost apologetically, as if to beg the reader's acceptance of the book's misnomer. The spirit of truthfulness forces me to add that if your favorite movie is M*A*S*H, if you are happiest hanging out with drunken sots, or if you ever considered obtaining the financial rewards of a medical malpractice case, then you might be the reader who would appreciate the school-boy comic tales of whoopee which endow "Country Doctor" with bulk, if not fiber.
