An additional perspective on hippies
The author separates the hippie movement from the protest and political culture of the 60s. That part of the book was very valuable. She is a musicologist so when she delves into analyzing psychedelic music, it becomes esoteric. I gave it four stars for her insightful categorizing of the hippies. Books have to be really good for me to recommend. The weakness: she ended the book with the common refrain of Manson and the Altamont concert as signals to the end of the hippie movement. Tons of people use those two events like they determined the course of the decade. They didn't. The movement wasn't derailed by two localized events.
Still, the book was mostly a unique idea which she supported.
