Abzug shows how the late eighteenth century medical man Benjamin Rush originated many of the major reform impulses and that most of the reform movements were born in New England in the nineteenth century as part of the Second Great Awakening (religious revival). There are chapters on the temperance and abolitionist movements, two chapters on some of the fads of the period (phrenology, hydropathy, spiritualism, Graham's special diet), and finally a chapter on women's rights. With its strong emphasis on the religious links of these reform movements, American Reform and the Religious Imagination provides an original and vital perspective on early nineteenth century America.
