Spike Jones & His City Slickers performed thousands of concerts during the 1940s and this compilation comes from some of his Armed Forces Network broadcasts in Europe. Relatively few of Jones' hits are present, except for the sidesplitting "My Old Flame," with Paul Frees' incredible imitation of Peter Lorre, followed by Lorre himself doing some excerpts of his own version of the song plus a silly skit with Jones and the band. The highlights are the insane high octane Dixieland arrangements accented by the various odds squawks and unusual percussion that they were know for, especially "By The Beautiful Sea" and "Pleas Don't Talk About Me When I'm Gone." Although there is some surface noise from the source material for this CD, this is a highly recommended release. ~ Ken Dryden, Rovi
