Anyone who is truly knowledgeable of Appalachian music can tell you that it has European roots. When immigrants from Ireland, Scotland, and England moved to the U.S., they brought their folk traditions with them -- eventually, their music became Americanized and evolved into what we now know as bluegrass, country, and Anglo-American folk. Focusing on the Appalachian-minded repertoire of veteran folksinger Jean Ritchie, this album of Anglo-American folk is very mindful of its European roots. The Cool of the Day: The Music of Jean Ritchie includes not only traditional material, but also songs that Ritchie wrote herself. People who think of Appalachian-minded repertoire as earthy and down-home will be surprised to hear how sophisticated and polished the Dusing Singers are. Arranger David Dusing's eight-member vocal ensemble draws on a variety of European influences -- not only folk from Ireland, Scotland, and England, but also Moorish music and European church music. So what you end up with on this CD is a very creative Appalachian/European blend. The album acknowledges the cultural contributions of Anglo-Americans from the Appalachian areas of the U.S., and it also acknowledges the music of their European ancestors. Although The Cool of the Day pays tribute to Ritchie, it is hardly a slavish imitation of her work -- in fact, it is anything but that. The Dusing Singers' arrangements of songs that Ritchie has embraced are far from carbon copies of her versions. On Ritchie's albums, her voice is the focal point -- on The Cool of the Day, you have eight voices coming together to form a cohesive whole. Folk enthusiasts should make a point of hearing this interesting CD. ~ Alex Henderson, Rovi
