Was AIDS intentionally inflicted upon blacks by whites? Was JFK assassinated as part of an intricate conspiracy? Pipes traces conspiracy theories through history to show that "Conspiracism"--genuine and virulent belief in a conspiracy--dates back to the First Crusade and reached a peak in the Soviet Union and Nazi Germany, with the focus shifting from the Jews, groups such as Freemasons and the Rosicrucians, and back again. -- DanielPipes.org

There are many times when I wished I had had a general practical book covering the history of, and motivation behind, conspiracy theories. I think this author has done a fine job of surveying what is out there and how these theories came to be. He looks at the conspiracy theories about the Knights Templar, the Masons, the Trilateral Commission, the Council on Foreign Relations, the Illuminati and the Kennedy assassination. He also explores the fraudulent so-called Protocols of the Elders of Zion. He shows how a false structure of scholarship can be assembled around conspiracy theories and offers advice on how to distinguish between reality and fantasy in a frustratingly bizarre tangle of false theories.
