The strongest rea--son is to be found in a number of cases, which, notwithstanding the great exertions of the natives to conceal them, are tried in the Native Courts: and we may be certain that every exertion is made to effect such concealment, where, from the nature' of their prejudices, the wholly family suffers by the discovery.-t A Brahmin cannot, by the Hindoo Law, sufl"er death. If he steals a Soodder, say the Shasters, he is fined; if a'S'oodder steal a Brahmin, he is to be burnt to death.-' r Another Another mild punishment forthe person who should even abuse a Bm/mm, was spitting him, and roasting him to death l The'Bra/zmins love feasting and jollity; and asthey at first' hadno pnofession, it was necessary that others should entertain them.
