But when she began to go towards George's cottage, Bell demurred, and said she wanted to go to Con Macarthur's. "To Con's!" exclaimed Eosie in surprise. "Do you go there?" "I'd as soon have thought of goin' to see a mad bull wanst; but a week or two back that dog of his came out when I was passin', an' barked so wicked that the wee fellow that had hould of my han' got frightened an' run away. I shouted, an' Con come out an' 'chooed' the dog, an' tuk me in, and gave me some tay; and when I was lavin', he tuk me down the road himself, quite kin'ly. So I'm goin' again." Eosie was so delighted to hear this proof of the softening of Con's heart that she felt as if she would liko to run all the way to his house; but instead she had to walk very slowly, suiting her steps to those of the blind woman, and in spite of the shade of her broad hat, she felt very hot before they reached it. She did not go round the road, as that would have been more than a mile, but led Bell along the lane at the back of their own house, which ran through some of her father's fields, direct to the common. Here she had some difficulty in guiding the blind woman over the uneven ground, and she was very glad when she came in sight of Con's cottage. She knocked gently, but no one answered.
