Frisch was one of a handful of persons awarded the title of professor emeritus at Defense Systems Management College (DSMC, now the Defense Acquisition University). Frisch retired from the DSMC in 1998 as director of the Technical Management Department, teaching graduate-level courses in defense acquisition management. He was an expert on the economics of the United States maintaining armed forced in Europe. Frisch, with co-author Wilbur D. Jones, Jr. (Captain, U.S. Navel Reserve, ret. ), published Condemned to Live; A Panzer Artilleryman s Five-Front War in 1999, his memoirs of his time as a common solider of the German army for seven years during World War II. He spent two years in an American POW camp when he was captured in Italy in 1945. Features 140 hitherto unpublished photographs and illustrations, and 7 maps. History truly is written by the victors, but now 'Condemned to Live' joins the the ranks of books such as Guy Sager's 'The Forgotten Soldier', Hans von Luck's 'Panzer Commander' and Siegfried Kappe's 'Soldat' to help destroy the image of the average Wehrmacht soldier as being a ruthless, stupid, brutal, amoral automaton. Dr. Frisch was simply a young Austrian caught up in the events of his time. Like most of his comrades in the Wehrmacht, there was no question of choice involved in his military service, it was compulsory. Like the majority of Wehrmacht soldiers outside of the ranks of the 'true believers', the name of the game was 'do one's duty to the Vaterland and survive to go home'. In battle loyalty, as in the Allied armies, was given to one's comrades and reality rarely extended beyond that small group. Dr. Frisch takes us on his tour of European battlefields with his Panzer Artillery Battalion from Poland to France, then Russia and on to Sicily and Italy, where he was captured. We get to know a kind, decent man making his way as best he can through the insanity of war, supported by his friends, his sense of humor and a lot of luck. Along the way he meets decent people of a variety of nationalities. Dr. Frisch decided to share his story with us after so many years of silence.

I have studied countless books and newspaper and magazine articles about the Second World War,and have watched many documentaries, and, since most of the German soldiers were NOT Nazi party members, and many were draftees, could it be that they were no more personally barbaric than the Americans? According to the author of this book, the answer is a resounding YES. The world is familiar with the horror stories of the invasion of Russia and the inhuman treatment of the Russian Jews by special units, but Professor Fritsch points out that those special units were all part of the SS,who WERE all Nazis, more or less fanatical. He says that only about 10% of the regular German Army WERE Nazis, and so most of them were soldiers in the army, fighting soldiers of the opposing army. Fritsch fought in 6 different places, but was frostbitten in Russia on the leg, from riding a motorcycle in bitter cold weather, was sent home to recover, and so missed getting sent to the battle of Stalingrad. He tells a very painful story of the suffering of the soldiers, the homesickness, the starving and freezing in the Russian winter. He tells horror stories of how the Russian peasants were living under the Communist yoke, how terrible and backward their houses were, how cold inside in the winter. One is left with the feeling that Hitler's insane war caused pain and death and suffering, not just to non-Germans, but to his own troops. 96% or more of the Germans captured as POWs in Russia never returned home alive, and some 600 THOUSAND died, just in the battle of Stalingrad alone. What a needless, senseless tragedy. The book leaves you with the understanding that, yes, most of the German army WAS like any other army, with decent, strong young men who were only there fighting because they were drafted into it,and the loss of several million German men and boys in that war WAS a tragedy,NOT a deserved fate. The book was written with the help of Wibur Jones, since Professor Fritsch emigrated to the US and his English wasn't as good as it needed to be. The story he tells, though,is a very important one, vital to understanding the true nature of the war. Fritsch also makes several very powerful comments throughout the book,on the nature of war, human nature, and other topics, I highly recommend it.
