Not illustrated. 1908 Excerpt: ...336 A weak solution of muriatic acid and water may be used for cleaning concrete surfaces before attaching new concrete to old concrete, and before plastering or patching, but before applying the acid the concrete should be thoroughly wetted by playing a stream of water on it for several minutes, and again after the acid is applied. This will prevent possible injurious effects from the acid working into the concrete. 337 When cutting out old brickwork, stonework, or concrete, use pneumatic tools as much as possible on account of economy. 338 If a granolithic finish is to be put on the floor, have this immediately follow the placing of the under concrete, even when shores are to be placed upon it at once. 339 Do not attempt to put a top coat less than 2" thick on set concrete, and even then be prepared to see unsightly shrinkage cracks on the surface. 340 Cover the floor carefully after it is finished, keep it moist as long as possible, in any case for not less than three weeks, and protect it from any injury. 341 In placing the finish, in a case of this kind, great care must be taken to get a proper bond between the old concrete and the granolithic finish. The old concrete must be thoroughly cleaned, preferably roughed with a bush hammer, and just before the finish is ready to be applied, a neat cement paste should be rubbed into the old concrete with a steel brush. 342 Compressed air, when obtainable, is useful for cleaning surfaces. 343 It is also important, in order to get a perfect bond, to have the old concrete thoroughly wet before the finish is applied.
