In the year 1734, near the entrance of Lake W'innipeg, was established Fort Maurepas, and here for a time exploration ceased. Owing to the exhaustion of supplies. During the month of June, 1736, twenty-one members of the expedition were encamped upon an island in the Lake of the lvoods, and surprised bv a band of hostile Sioux. And all killed. Among the slain were one of Verandrie's sons, also a priest named Ouneau1 who was the Spiritual adviser of the party.
