This book may not have been re-issued except perhaps in the States. I would urge all operetta fans to obtain it from libraries or even second-hand (prices from a few pounds to hundreds).
Gervase was, like me, born in Birmingham & his father was a professor. Also like me he was an actor. I don't know if he sang as well as I do. As we have to in our field, he had many varied jobs, including stage-director, composer (I'd like to hear an operetta by him), chorus-master, conductor, railway-clerk & station-master etc.
This must be the most intelligent book written by a musician on the subject. It was an impossibility. He can't possibly mention every composer of operetta, certainly not every operetta. He explores a huge range of works. You may not always agree with him. You may not always understand him. He sometimes mentions technical terms like "tierce de Picardie" & he quotes bars (musical notes). Gervase was very kind giving me a prize for a Gilbert and Sullivan article I wrote when young. Many libraries have his books & he deserves the honour people give this wonderful book by still consulting it as a valuable reference.
