Violinist Edwin J. McEnelly led a popular dance band in Massachusetts during 1902-1942. McEnelly continually adapted to musical styles and, during the period covered by this CD, his group was a first-class dance band that satisfied listeners of the late '20s. This collection has all 21 of his orchestra's recordings from between 1925 and 1929, only two of which were ever reissued, and that was during the LP era. Overall, the jazz content is low (other than on "Spanish Shawl"), although the ensembles and the few brief solos are influenced by jazz. The music includes foxtrots, a few waltzes, some guest vocals, clean ensembles, and a lightly swinging beat. Although the music is not essential, this CD has a solid sampling of mainstream hot dance music of the era and the packaging is perfect. ~ Scott Yanow, Rovi
