Berube was given a MacArthur Fellowship after this book was published. He deserved it. This study began with the saving of letters from a dumpster then Berube pursued it not only in libraries but by testing it out in lecture-slide shows which brought out new witnesses all over the country. This history is so thorough and responsible that I tried to email him congratulations last week and found that he had died of double stomach ulcers far too young. This is an absolutely admirable piece of research and historical writing. I got it for one dollar plus postage.
