This is a statistical handbook of data about COMECON, the Council for Mutal Economic Assistance whose members include Bulgaria, CSSR, GDR, Hungary, Poland, Romania and the USSR. It is compiled from three groups of sources: the official statistical yearbooks and periodicals published by the member countries of COMECON, the statistical yearbook of the CMEA secretariat (supplemented by publications of Yugoslavia, an associate but not a member of that body), the data published by international organizations - the United Nations, ECE, OECD, IMF, the World Bank etc and Western sources. The information in the book is arranged, as a rule, in groups of tables, the first table quoting absolute figures and reference to the sources used. The second table shows "average annual growth rate" and "percentages of total"; the first table in the group being used as the source. At the beginning of each chapter definitions are given of the most important concepts and appellations deviating from those used in Western statistics.
