Yet the cynicism is relieved by as constant a gauloiserie - untranslatable term: the irony does not impair a kind heart, and M???rim???e has all the charm of the kaleidoscopic French character, of shifting and beautiful lights, in which the very angles turn and become parts of well rounded and graceful designs.
